FAQ's
Why are we getting a new Lead Pastor? Does this happen often? | Thankfully, leadership transitions are not a common occurrence for us. Anthony Miller will only be the 9th lead pastor in the 72-year history of Parkcrest. In fact, the last four pastors—Roger Beard, Mike Goldsworthy, Jared Wilkins, and Eric Marsh—have collectively led Parkcrest for 50 years. When Jared unexpectedly passed away in October of 2022, Eric Marsh was appointed as our Interim Lead Pastor. He graciously accepted the role temporarily while we searched for a permanent lead pastor. Now, we warmly welcome Anthony as our 9th lead pastor, and we eagerly anticipate his leadership as the Parkcrest story continues to unfold. |
How was Anthony selected as our Lead Pastor? | In the early part of last year, our elders collaborated with a church leadership consultant to craft our search strategy, church profile, and job description. These key elements were shared with the community as part of the search update in October. The formal search process commenced in April, involving the distribution of our profile to churches similar to Parkcrest nationwide. We also reached out to pastors for references within their networks, seeking individuals who align with our vision and mission. Interviews with candidates took place with the elders and two local pastors who offered valuable insights based on their knowledge and love for Parkcrest. Further discussions occurred with the leadership team before reaching a final decision. Amidst this comprehensive selection process, the elders, leadership, and many of you joined us in prayer for discernment, seeking God’s guidance in making this important decision. |
What criteria guided the elders in the selection process? | In addition to the criteria outlined in the church profile and role description, the elders placed a strong emphasis on a candidate’s passion and demonstrated alignment with Parkcrest’s Vision, Mission, and Values. |
Why are the elders excited about Anthony? | Anthony’s passion for God and the community strongly resonates with our values here at Parkcrest. His alignment with our Mission, Vision, and Values is evident in the way his experiences have shaped him. Moreover, his appreciation for both our legacy and future is particularly inspiring to us. These qualities make Anthony a compelling and exciting choice for our leadership. |
What is Anthony’s background? | With almost two decades of experience in ministry, Anthony brings a wealth of expertise to his role as Lead Pastor at Parkcrest. Most recently, Anthony served as Pastor at Large at Saddleback Church, demonstrating his leadership in executive roles, communications, marketing, men’s ministry, and racial reconciliation initiatives. |
Does Anthony have a family? | Yes! We look forward to welcoming Anthony, along with his wife Kara, and their children, Titus and Jaia, into the Parkcrest family. |
When is Anthony’s first day? | Anthony’s first day will be February 26, 2024. His first Sunday will be March 3rd, 2024. |
Is there an opportunity where I can get to know Anthony better and ask him questions? | We are glad you asked! Join us on Sunday, February 11th during our 9:00 and 10:45 services to hear more from Anthony. After the services, stick around for a Tailgate party featuring food, family, and fellowship! It’s a fantastic chance to introduce yourself, engage in conversation, and get to know him a little more before his first Sunday. |

What steps is Parkcrest taking to ensure a smooth transition? | To ensure a seamless transition, we have taken several key initiatives, including: Communication: Anthony’s role has been effectively communicated to the entire leadership team and staff. They have had opportunities to meet him, creating a sense of connection and shared vision. Collaboration: Anthony, along with the elders and the leadership team, will engage in extended meetings to collaboratively outline priorities for Parkcrest. This ensures that everyone is aligned not only during the transition period but also well into the future. |
What about the current pastors? | Rest assured, our current pastors are here to stay! When Anthony assumes his role, Eric and Maurice will return to their respective positions held prior to October 2022. Moreover, Anthony, along with the elders, highly values the diverse perspectives and voices that all our leaders bring to the table. You can continue to expect to hear from them throughout the year. On that note, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Eric and the entire leadership team and staff for their selflessness and hard work over the past 17 months! |
Will there be any changes to Sunday mornings? | While it’s typical for some adjustments to occur during a leadership transition, as Anthony familiarizes himself with our community, we anticipate minimal changes. Our commitment remains unchanged – using Sunday mornings to connect people to Jesus through worship, using music, teaching, prayer, and Communion. |
Are the Vision, Mission and Values of Parkcrest going to change as a result of the transition? | No. Parkcrest’s Vision, Mission, and Values reflect our personality, identity, and unwavering response to God’s calling here in Long Beach throughout the church’s 72 year history. Our commitment to joining God in his redemptive work, both here and around the world, remains unchanged. |
